Ask Pete – Time Management

Question: Sometimes I seem so overwhelmed. There are many tasks that I need to do everyday. Do you have any tips for time management in a retail store?

Answer: I do. You cannot manage time! Only God can do that! But you can manage yourself! I learned this from the great Henry Habeeb many years ago before computers. Back then I used a legal pad to write down all my tasks. As I completed them I simply crossed them out. At the end of the day I rewrote the unfinished tasks on another sheet that would start the next day. My friend Jonathan DiPrinzio uses a task manager in Outlook which does essentially the same thing but allows you to prioritize tasks which I find very helpful.

One tip I would offer is this. Read all your tasks first before you begin your day and start with the one task that is the most important and often the most unpleasant! Brian Tracy wrote a book called Eat That Frog which focuses on attacking your highest payoff tasks first.  I hope this helps!
